What Is A Service Dog?

A service dog is a dog individually trained to perform tasks for the benefit of a person with a disability.

Service dogs perform a wide variety of tasks, which enable individuals to experience increased independence and enhanced quality of life.

Service dogs trained through CFS are able to perform a wide array of everyday tasks for their partners. Depending on the type of training, our dogs can:

  • Turn on lights and open doors
  • Provide balance and stability
  • Retrieve dropped items
  • Load a washer and unload a dryer
  • Provide assistance with dressing and undressing
  • Assist in making the bed and doing laundry
  • Provide physical support for transfers to and from a wheelchair

Canines for Service and Canines for Veterans does not train a persons own dog or certify a dog trained by an individual, trainer or another organization.  Our organization selects, trains, certifies only dogs we have trained within our organization.
