Service Dog Trainer (Obedience)
Position Description
CORE FUNCTION
The core function of this role is to solidify dog obedience by applying consistent training protocols in order to enable advancement in service dog training program.
KEY OUTCOMES & ACTIVITIES
OUTCOME 1 – Ensure CFS dogs’ transition smoothly from the Puppy Program into the Adult Training Program.
- Transition puppies into the Adult Program, by attending Puppy Graduation and participating in transition week activities.
OUTCOME 2 – Ensure each CFS dog demonstrates a clear understanding of basic obedience.
- Train and generalize basic obedience skills using ADI-aligned training methods to prepare dogs for intermediate and advanced work.
- Conduct training sessions in public environments (e.g., stores, restaurants, parks) to reinforce reliability and manners in real-world settings.
- Identify emerging behavior issues by working one-on-one with dogs in a variety of scenarios.
- Learn, apply, and reinforce effective training techniques, and support program development.
OUTCOME 3 – Document each CFS dog’s care, training progress, and behavioral development.
- Maintain accurate training logs and records in Salesforce and program files.
- Document all health concerns to ensure timely veterinary care and adherence to CFS health protocols.
OUTCOME 4 – Equip volunteer fosters with all the skills needed to train and care for CFS dogs.
- Coach volunteers to ensure they understand and maintain obedience expectations for the dogs in their care.
OUTCOME 5 – Prepare Veteran clients to feel confident working with their CFS dog.
- Prepare advanced dogs for placement with Veteran clients and participate in Team Training with the Veteran clients.
- Assist in the matching process when choosing a service dog for a Veteran client.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES
REQUIRED
- Minimum 1 year experience training dogs and working with their owners.
- Must have a proficient understanding of positive reinforcement-based training methods.
- Self-motivated with ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Team player with the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with other staff, volunteers, clients, donors, and the public.
- Ability to work well under pressure and prioritize multiple projects and tasks.
- Ability to exercise discretion and maintain client and employee confidentiality.
- Flexibility to work a varied schedule, including some nights and weekends.
- Ability to travel is required to meet the needs of clients and CFS.
- Ability to operate standard office equipment including but not limited to computers and copiers.
- This job requires that the employee be capable of lifting at least 60 pounds and handling a service dog in training that can weigh up to 90 pounds.
PREFERRED
- Knowledge of Salesforce
- Knowledgeable about the Americans with Disabilities Act and service dog laws.
- Experience working with Veterans.
- Service dog training experience.

REQUIREMENT FOR ALL POSITIONS
All positions are expected to identify and appropriately collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
- Must maintain a valid driver’s license that is acceptable to Canines for Services’ general liability insurance carrier and must maintain their own automobile insurance for the duration of employment. This requirement will be governed by and enforced under the organization’s Employee Handbook.
- Must be able to successfully pass and maintain any required background checks, including criminal and, where job-related, financial or credit screening.
