THE BEGINNING

Our organization was founded on December 1, 1996, by Rick Hairston. Initially, we operated in North and South Carolina under the name Carolina Canines for Service Inc. In 2011, the organization launched a rebranding campaign and changed its name to Canines for Service Inc.

KEY MILESTONES

 

1996

  • First service dog began training

 

1999

  • First grant received

  • First employee hired

  • First individual received service dog

 

2001

  • Moved operation into small training facility

 

2002

  • Launched Canines for Therapy program

  • Launched Canines for Literacy program

 

2005

  • Volunteers averaged 1,200 hours per month

  • Helped 53 dogs and cats displaced from New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina

 

2006

  • Provided over $1 million in services

 

2007

  • Held first annual Walk for Those Who Can't

 

2008

  • Launched Canines for Veterans program at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune Brig

  • Placed service dog with first Veteran 

 

2009

  • Expanded Canines for Therapy program to Raleigh, NC 

  • Partnered with Coastal Carolina Community College and received
    accreditation by Southern Association of Colleges and Schools
     

2010

  • Relocated Canines for Veterans program to Charleston Naval Station Brig

 

2011

  • Won Toyota Sienna Mobility Van in Toyota 100 Cars for Good

  • Canines for Veterans curriculum approved by U.S. Department of Labor as apprenticeship program

  • Placed 50th service dog

  • Provided over $6 million in services

  • Rebranded organization as Canines for Service

 

2012

  • Achieved full 4-year accreditation with Assistance Dogs International

 

2015

  • Moved Canines for Veterans program back to Wilmington, NC 

  • Provided over $11 million in services

 

2016

  • Relocated to new 5,000-square-foot training facility

 

2017

  • Achieved renewal accreditation with Assistance Dogs International

  • Expanded into additional 5,000 square feet

  • Launched Canines for Service Trainers Program

2018

  • Resumed Military Prison Service Dog Training Program at Marine Corps Installation East Regional Brig aboard Camp Lejeune

2019

  • Placed 100th service dog

  • Purchased facility (formerly leased)
