Custom-Trained Service Dogs for Individual Veteran Needs

Custom-Trained Service Dogs for Individual Veteran Needs

Canines for Service is a nationally accredited nonprofit dedicated to transforming the lives of Veterans through custom-trained service dog partnerships. Founded in 1996, we are the longest-running ADI-accredited service dog provider in North Carolina, and one of just 91 accredited organizations in North America. More than our credentials, we’re known for our compassion, commitment, and customized approach.

We serve Veterans with service-connected disabilities, whether physical or psychiatric, and provide every dog, training session, and travel arrangement at no cost to those we serve. Each dog is trained for one specific Veteran. That’s why we call it a partnership, not a placement. Once someone joins the Canines for Service family, they’re with us for life including access to successor dogs when the time comes.

Our goal is simple: help Veterans reclaim their independence, rebuild their confidence, and reconnect with life—one dog at a time.

Values That Guide Us

Veterans First

We exist for one purpose: to serve Veterans. Every decision, every dog, and every dollar is dedicated to restoring confidence, independence, and connection for those who’ve served our country.

Heart-led Service

We lead with empathy but act with intention. Whether it’s a conversation, a training session, or a life-changing placement, we meet people where they are—and move forward together.

One Dog, One Purpose

No two Veterans are the same—and no two dogs are either. We train each dog to support one person’s unique needs, ensuring every partnership is grounded in care, precision, and purpose.

Excellence With Integrity

As 1 of only 91 ADI-accredited organizations in North America, we meet the highest standards in training, ethics, and accountability. We earn trust by doing things the right way.

Access Without Barriers

Veterans should never face obstacles to the support they need. That’s why we provide every dog, every training, and every travel arrangement at no cost for life.
