Service Dogs
for Veterans

Every dog is a gift back to those who served.

Serving Those Who’ve Served

Serving Those Who’ve Served

Canines for Service inspires Veterans with life-changing canine partnerships—at no cost to the recipient. Our program is open to honorably discharged Veterans across the U.S. who have service-connected diagnoses including PTSD, MST, traumatic brain injury (TBI), mobility limitations, and moral injury.

These are not companion animals—they’re highly trained partners who help Veterans regain confidence, restore independence, and navigate daily life with renewed purpose.

Is a Service Dog Right for You?

We provide custom trained, personalized service dogs to qualified Veterans nationwide. We do not train personal pets to become service dogs. To be considered for the Canines for Service program and start the application process, you must meet the following criteria:

Veteran Status

  • Must be honorably or medically discharged
  • Must provide a copy of your DD214 (transitioning service members can start the process, but review will begin after discharge)

Qualifying Diagnosis

  • Must have a service-connected diagnosis of PTSD, MST, TBI, and/or mobility limitations

CFS does not provide dogs for:

  • Medical alert (e.g., seizures, diabetes)
  • Vision or hearing loss
  • Mental health diagnoses other than PTSD

Stable Home Environment

  • Minimum of 6 months in stable, safe housing
  • No dogs, cats, or free-roaming animals in the home (during and after placement)

Background & Health

  • Must pass a national background check
  • No convictions involving violence, children, animals, or felony charges
  • Misdemeanors and substance use history reviewed case-by-case
  • If applying with PTSD: must be in active treatment with a licensed provider
  • Mental health concerns (e.g., suicidal ideation) will require review and care team consultation

How to Apply For a Service Dog

We’ve designed a step-by-step process to ensure the best fit between each Veteran and their service dog.

4

Interview & Review

A virtual interview with our team, followed by evaluation by our Client Review Committee.
